a little blurb of me talking about the tune...my poor, quick transcription:
"I wrote it while really depressed and in a very existential funk… altered states etc… you know.. I was thinking of this woman that I had met briefly in kentucky...I literally spoke 4 words to her.... I have no clue what she's like, or who she really is but she is stunningly gorgeous. It was just one of those weird moments when you lock eyes with someone and immediately understand something deep about them… maybe some people call it love, who the fuck knows. She just had this crazy thing about her and we shared a very intense moment..... She probably wouldn't have any idea of what im talking about, haha! she certainly doesn't know there's a song about her haha! Anyway, I was halfway awake and dreaming about her simultaneously. In essence, the song is about desire and ultimately about how life itself is just that. Its about coming to an understanding of your own autonomy but feeling a deep need for something more....the desire to feel fully complete, loved, wanted, etc. but understanding that ultimately we can only have ourselves in the moment as it is right now. you know, there's no time, but mine.
It was the first tune we cut on the album. it was me on acoustic and jonathan beam playing bass. we tracked directly to tape and after one take it was like, woah, something is happening here... i think we did the tune 1 or 2 more times and we got the feel we wanted. it was just one of those great musical moments that stick out in your mind. his bass playing is incredible throughout the record. he always adds tons of great embellishments that i would never think of writing. Jonathan Humphrey, my partner in crime with this whole record obviously helped out with the lyrics and really gave it that extra spark it needed. We've worked together on and off for about a year now and its been outrageously fruitful. we came up with a few different concepts and i take care of the music / lyrical foundation and he edits and gives feedback. and musical feedback too... he's awesome, its been great to work with him. and the harp, man we looked all over for a harp player and had no luck. then one day i was sitting at starbucks with a friend and asked him if he knew anyone, and he laughed, and pointed at a woman walking up to the door and said "she plays harp", haha, and sure enough she did! her name is Carolyn dupont. i asked her if she was free that weekend to come track and she was.... it all just worked out. Great musician too, super profesional. the mix was a big part of this tune too, tim did a great job. everyone did a great job. im absolutely thrilled with how it all turned out. i have never had more fun making music / recording. lots of crazy, awesome, strange things happend, it was an Experience with a capital E for sure."
